Ski Masks

UPDATE 07/12/05

I receive countless emails everyday asking for the patterns for these masks. I posted the instructions for a couple of months on my Flickr account which is now closed. I no longer have the magazine which I gave away. Sorry guys, but unless I come up with another copy, I can't provide you with the pattern.

Found these ski masks in McCall's Needlework & Crafts Magazine from 1965. They are all a bit disturbing, but the little girl is just plain nightmarish.

The first two look like sock monkeys, and the boys mask is what, either a chicken or a Mexican wrestler?

The little girl...well...I'm going to need therapy after seeing that.

I must say those are the oddest ski masks I have seen for a long time...(she speaks as if she has seen anything of the like in her life!)
quite odd and spooky....
would you like my sister to knit you one?

Hazel, I would love the ski mask of the girl, but it would do me no good since winter does not exist in Houston. Even if it did, I would be like Michael in his schoolgirl blazer, scaring little old ladies.

How excellently bizarre, looks like winter wear for the slipnot freaks; I would make one if I had the instructions, did you find them, or just the pics?

Amazing! I don't know whether these masks are for terorists of the Acid League or for the new generation of Mexican Luchadores!

The little girl would be known as The Yellow Avenger.

The little boy must have been the inspiration for Darth Maul, but there must be laws against making little girls wear sh*t like that.

As for the adults, they're old enough to know better, unless of course they were fed Rohipnol (?sp) first.

I think the little boy is supposed to be an "Indian Brave".... you know, the 60's weren't very PC. ;)

This link made the rounds on my Stitch'nBitch listserv (knitting group) and one member had a nightmare last night about the little girl chasing her.

Too bad the masks are for Boys/Girls aged 4-8. To make an adult one, I guess I would just 2X/3X the amount stated? I dunno...

But these masks would be ideal for people with facial deformities! As if they're not scary enough on their own.

Blogger Will said...

Crimony.. those are really creepy.. like what the Partridge Family would wear if they robbed a liqor store hopped up on crank.

And to think, someone, somewhere, thought these were cute..

My brother and I had these made for us by our grandmother (items 3 and 4). Yes, I had the burn-victim little girl ski-mask, which I wore, when I was around 6-7 years old.

It was itchy. It was ugly. It was a gift of love.

Come one the first picture (the mask weared by the girl) is very stylish. I was impressed when I read that the picture was from 1965, actually i think you could walk arround with mask here in Berlin and be really hip.

Yes, heroin use was rampant in the sixties... Didn't realize it had made it to the knitting circles though... How would you like these to be the last thing you saw before you fell into a drug induced coma?

Ooh, shout-out to the Strongbad reference!
But seriously, The Cheat, those are the scariest things I have ever seen, like, ever. I think if they were solid-colored they might be slightly less reminiscent of B-grade horror villains...

8:54 PM
Blogger jas-the-per said...

Yo dude, that thing is actually quite stylish, if it were in solid color. I'd so sport one of those adult men ones right about now... I'm looking at something like a blizzard outside... and the one for the boys! dude, if I tweak it to be like a strongbad mask I'd so get my kid one if I had a kid... but I do feel sorry for that girl... and myself for seeing that picture...

Okay, these masks are proof that even Suzy Homemaker did lots of LSD back in the 1960s. No wonder so many people in their early 40s are now in therapy, after having to wear those!

Wow. I have just found my unique and slightly frightening Christmas cards. Just in time. Thanks...I think.
Also, as a knitter, I find it hard to believe that any knitter, at any time, would have lovingly made these for any child or friend, family member, etc. Unless they were enjoying a VERY cruel joke. Or they REALLY hated the recepient.
