Yearbook of the Year

This is the best yearbook I have ever seen. A man who knows that we like photos and letters gave us a box of ephemera from an art/architecture student from the late 1960s-70s. Included was this Rice yearbook from 1970. I have scanned a few of the pages so you can get an idea what it contains. Apparently they set up a photobooth in their school in 1969 and asked students to pose. Those photobooths were then used as the yearbook images. Genius, in my book!

I just wish my family didn't disapprove of Cathy so wholeheartedly! Oh well - maybe it's all for the best. My report card (see scan)

I have to make 1 E or less in conduct to go the sc. geology field trip.

Right now this very instant - I could be best friends with Cathy, Mary, or Marialice but not with all of them - they all clash - Marialice clashes the most with everyone. She is not on my social level - below. I have worked so hard to get up - so I don't know what to do. Here I stand whatever I do I'll regret. I want to keep all my friends - I will have to decide Mon or sooner. Gotta go its 10:15. I have to get up at 6:30 tomorrow. Bye!

I love the Robert Crumb-esque drawing, is that for the cover? My year book photos never got more original than sticking a well timed finger up my nose--much to the chagrin of the photographer. He was deeply concerned when he asked if I would like a re-take, and I said "No."

Hi G! Yes, that is the cover of the yearbook. The inside page has directions and then no other info except for the photos themselves.
These people really were creative, lugging in posters, plants, etc into the booth. Several of them are smoking joints so that probably helped loosen them up.

Did the woman who knew these girls get back in touch with you?

What are Mallory's grades for conduct? She mentions needing an E but it looks like she's got some already, or are they G's?

I love the photobooth pics. It's impossible to find a photobooth these days (although I do like the Japanese ones that let you add draw on them and have funky backgrounds).

My friends had a photobooth at their wedding. So, the good news is that it's possible to rent a photobooth in LA.

The yearbook is pure genius...what town is it? It has got to be a private school. It looks like Robert Crumb did the cover art himself. I love it!!!!

Great yearbook . . . I think I'm in love with Patsy Marburger (sp?)

I have seen this done at the college level, allowing some degree of self expression via self portraits. Sometimes however, they might only allow the Senior Class to do this.

At the high school level, because there is greater likelihood of portrait sales, the senior photos tend to be formal.

No one in college bought prints of themselves to trade-- too high school.

Did anyone else notice Elton John?

The Rice yearbook still puts on a similar event every year called "Picture Yourself," but the photobooth had been replaced by a more conventional camera with backdrop, to allow for larger groups and more props.

It would be wonderful to see higher-res versions of these pages, you miss quite alot of the detail through the current size - they look so intriguing!

Anonymous admirer of Ms. Marburger, beware... a male professor reportedly felt the same way you did, and for his troubles he was charged with harrassment and lost his job.

Yes, I was in that class, and yes, there were a lot of creative people around me. Somewhere, in a closet, probably behind the Christmas decorations, I have a copy of that yearbook. Those were the days!

As an undergrad in the early 90s I worked in the Rice alumni office and used to LOVE looking through these old yearbooks! Thanks for posting.

1969 was my 1st year at Rice. My mother threw out my copy of the '70 yearbook. My wife is interested in a copy (it was in a box). Anyone have a copy to sell? Original is a box with multiple documents inside - picture book, comic book, etc. Don't know if I can leave contact info. Many crazies, many straights at Rice those days.
