The Haven of Contentment

Hey folks, Nick here. I recently picked up a big lot of slides that were appartently part of some old Moose lodge slides shows in the 1960s. Unfortunately, the cassettes which must have gone along with them to provide the narration weren't with the slides but I'd love to hear how they spun some of these images into a narrative called The Haven of Contentment. Let's just say this place looks a lot closer to Twin Peaks than to Shangri-La.

Oh, my! My head is spinning with thoughts of genetic engineering, Stepford, brain-washing and all sorts of other "consiracy theory" thoughts.

On the other hand, it's nice to see photos of Dick Cheney's childhood home and the environment in which he grew up. It explains a lot!

the strange thing that looks like a giant mixer is an old hydrotherapy tub. kind of the institutional version of a one person hot tub and no doubt state of the art back then.

Appears to be a 1960s promotional slideshow for Moosehaven - a retirement community for members of the Loyal Order of Moose, one of many fraternal lodges in the US. They boast 1.5 million members. See http://www.mousehaven.org for its 2007 incarnation.

the modern version shows it to be an odd sort of retirement enclave, or at least now.

It sounds scary in modern terms too. No bills, no cleaning, well at least for the proper residents, but who does all the work?

Zombie slave collectors.

Seriously the history section on the site and in the video is kinda interesting. Commune living and all that.

Creepy, I know what this is! My father was a Moose member back then. He contributed to a something called "Mooseheart" a Moose comunitiy for troubled kids. They also had "Moosehaven" wich was a retirement place for old Mooses. Google "Mooseheart" or "Moosehaven", it still exists today.

Thanks for this post about "Moose Haven"

My Father was a big deal in the Moose back in the 70s, we went to Moose Haven on vacation one time.

As I remember it it was a very nice place. It was just a retirement community for members of the Moose. We also went to "Moose Heart" that was a place for orphans.

Remix time- just add audio starting w/ a filmstrip BEEP.
Love the way the images have settled into a mostly red glow- old Ektrachrome perhaps?

Creepy-weird series. I like it. And the shot of the woman approaching the front door of the house? we totally had the SAME decorative grillwork on our storm door - conspiracy? I.think.not...or maybe just 60's tacky door decorations.
