Shocking Find

John got up at his usual rooster crowing hour to hit the garage sales on Saturday. While driving around, he found a sign for a sale that was not advertised. He drove up to a large, old home at 7 a.m. The people who were running the sale saw him waiting and let him and his buddy into the house. Let me stress that John is not one of those rude people who knock on the door early. He hates when people do that at sales. It was just a lucky shopping day. The sale didn't officially start until 9 a.m., so they had 2 hours of shopping by themselves. The house was filled with boxes of old stuff and the attic had been untouched for years. John was there for at least 4 hours and came home looking like Pig Pen. He found some fantastic things, like old toys, comics, a 1939 NY World's Fair wooden cigar box, old books and catalogs, several goodies for me, a pair of Norman Bel Geddes beds, and tons more that I have not even seen yet. His buddy only buys military things and he also scored. Let me add that the prices were dirt cheap.
He also purchased some old medical things, like an 1890 pill box, a skull, and a shock machine from the Montrose Hospital in Houston. I have never heard of that facility, so I'll have to do a little research. As for the pills, I'll have to take my time and clean it out because it's filthy. It has two rows of meds on each side, many with the pills still there. The 80 year old gent who owned the house told John that he once had a neighbor who was a doctor and he had given him all the old medical things.

So for all you junkers out there, be sure to drive through old neighborhoods on the weekend and look for posted sale signs. You might just come across one that was not advertised and get a big advantage over the other shoppers by being first in line.

Wow! Sounds like he hit a small jackpot. I'd like to see more pics of the other things. I make a point of hitting a few older home estate sales a year. I find alot of the "goo" stuff has been picked over. Must be those early birds showing up befor sale time. Ebayers are the worst!
Can I borrow that shock machine? My wife has been acting up and could use an attitude adjustment. :)
Thanks for the pics!
Wow! What a truly incredible find!
I have been visiting your site for about a year and I absolutely LOVE it! Keep up the wonderful work and amazing finds!
What cool stuff...I wanna see the rest! Please keep us updated as you find out what the pills are! I'm not a morning person, but if getting out there at 7:00 a.m. (oh, ugh!) will reap such rewards, perhaps I could do it...perhaps.
I love the shock "therapy" machine and the little tacked-in, hand-written note of how to operate it. Geez...do you think they had handwritten, scratch pad notes about how to do a lobotomy?..."inset probe up left or right nostril...whichever presents less resistance to probe..."
Oh my.
Hope there aren't any controlled substances in the pill bottles, to say nothing of toxic leakage - handle with care. Bet you could put that shocker on ebay and get some serious cash from those with strange desires. Seen that kinda thing B4, strictly from an observers POV, mind you; wonder if it's UL approved? :-0
Sounds like you found some great stuff. The pills look great in the box - a readymade Cornell!
Oh WOW!!! That's the kind of sale that my friend Wendy and I always dream of finding!!!
Congrats on the deal of the day!!
Did I read that right? You got a skull?! A real skull? I must say in the most non-creepy way - that's cool!
What an amazing haul! I'm so jealous!
vanwall, I am afraid about cleaning out the pill box, so I am going to have my father's pharmacist buddy go through the contents before I touch anything.
ookpik, yes a real skull. It was one of the items that belonged to the doctor. I am a bit creeped out by it. John finally put it in the garage because I didn't want it in the house.
Thanks for the comments everyone!
Such great scores! Lucky!
Love the site and this post reminds of a sale that I hit about 6 years ago -- the folks had owned a drug store in the 60's.
Great find!
